Health care, transportation and a host of other services for the elderly in the Bronx may soon be history after proposed budget cuts. The residents of the Pelham Parkway Houses are part of what?s known as a ?NORC,? or naturally occurring retirement community. The designation is given by the Department for the Aging to certain neighborhoods where a majority of the residents are 60 or older. Currently, there are four in the Bronx. Pelham Parkway Houses, run by the Bronx Jewish Community Council, is set to lose $245,000 for 2007. The residents have joined with Senator Reuben Diaz (D-NY), Bronx Councilman Jimmy Vacca (D-13th District), Assemblywoman Naomi Rivera (D-BX) and the borough president?s office to ask Mayor Bloomberg (R-NY) and the Department of Aging to restore the cuts.
