The American Cancer Society is urging Bronx smokers to quit their bad habit as it celebrates the 30th anniversary of the Great American Smokeout.

The organization handed out free nicotine patches and information on how to stop smoking at Lincoln Medical Center Thursday. Participants also heard testimonials from former smokers.

The American Cancer Society says smokers need to find a good reason to quit, such as their health or family. Smokers should then pick a quit date and follow through by getting rid of ash trays. Finally, the organization says people should replace smoking with healthier activities like going to the gym.
