The Bronx Zoo is working to rehabilitate hundreds of turtles rescued from the illegal wildlife trade.
The Wildlife Conservation Society says the zoo has become a safe haven, helping more than 800 turtles since 2024.
Federal officials say there has been an unprecedented surge in turtle trafficking recently.
Turtles taken to the zoo receive a comprehensive intake examination that records their sex, species, weight and overall health condition.
From there they are given veterinary treatment and treated for any injuries or disease.
Once they are deemed healthy, the animals are transferred to U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service so they can be released back to the wild.
