A child care facility in Rockland was evacuated Monday afternoon out of an abundance of caution while firefighters handled a brushfire.

Local fire departments responded to Filors Lane in Stony Point shortly before 2 pm Monday.

Fire officials say the brushfire spread to a shed and detached garage.

They add while there was no threat to the nearby Magic Gardens Child Care, it was evacuated out of an abundance of caution.

No one was injured in the fire, according to officials.

The Stony Point Fire Department says it visits these children every year as part of Fire Safety and Prevention Week.

"The fact that we are a licensed program, we were able to get the children out in a timely fashion because we practice proper protocol," said Denise Forsberg, the owner of Magic Gardens Child Care.

She stresses that families should ensure the child care they use is licensed, too.

"I think it's important that being a licensed facility that I am, there's something to be said about that. Because had the means of egress been blocked if it was just a regular home or a regular daycare center the outcome may not have been the same," she says.

News 12 was told that Stony point, West Haverstraw, Hillcrest and Thiells fire departments all responded to get the situation under control.
