Lakeland Central School District families woke up to unexpected transportation changes Wednesday after as many as 25 bus drivers called out sick, forcing route consolidations and delays.
Parents say they received early morning emails warning that buses might not run on time. The disruption follows a burst pipe at Copper Beach Middle School in Yorktown Heights earlier this week that flooded hallways and pushed students into remote learning. Because drivers are paid hourly, the temporary closure meant fewer working hours — and smaller paychecks.

In a statement to News 12, Superintendent Dr. Karen Gagliardi said the district compensates employees consistent with the collective bargaining agreement and pays hourly staff for all hours worked.
The middle school is expected to remain closed through at least Feb. 23 as negotiations continue.
