Local business owners and community members are rallying against a proposal to allow the Elmsford Sam's Club to build a gas station on its property.

The group, which rallied outside Greenburgh Town Hall, says the project is bad for both the local environment and the economy.

The project includes building 14 gas pumps and underground tanks capable of storing tens of thousands of gallons of fuel.

The group doesn't feel the cost of cheaper gas is worth it, arguing it could create hazards to the local waterways and back up traffic on Route 9A.

They also project it will cost 200 local jobs.

The Greenburgh Town Board held a public hearing Wednesday night on the project.

Greenburgh Town Supervisor Paul Feiner says he has some concerns over the economic impact this project could have.

Attorneys for Sam's Club have previously denied any potential negative community impacts.

"We believe the economic impacts that have been alleged are completely unfounded," said Jeremiah Candreva, an attorney for Sam's Club.

The board did not vote on a potential zoning change Sam's Club needs to move the project along.

The next regular board meeting is scheduled for Feb. 23.
