? The Bronx Terminal Market officially closed Wednesday, leaving merchants to get the word out to customers about the move.
The city is evicting the food stores, many of them unique, near Yankee Stadium and relocating them to other areas. The market was founded in 1935 and was bustling with activity until recently when the city decided to build the Gateway shopping center in its place. Some businesses have been allowed to stay until the middle of June.
Shop owners say they have lost customers in the process and fear the area will lose its unique identity in favor of national, chain retailers. One employer is worried for his workers. Although many fought the proposal until the end, they say they are looking toward the future and hope they can still turn a profit.
