Bronx families getting out of homelessness may soon have one less thing to worry about in their new apartments.

The Department of Homeless Services (DHS) commissioner told the City Council he will increase inspections for the Housing Stability Plus Program. The program places homeless families living in shelters into private apartments. This move comes after homeless advocates called for better lead paint inspections in the apartments families are placed in.

Elected officials say they want a guarantee of stricter enforcement of the 2004 Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Act. And though the DHS commissioner didn?t make any guarantees, many leaders say increasing inspections is a step in the right direction.
