Bronx officials who protested an Army-sponsored concert Sunday say its recruiting tactics are overly aggressive and recruiters are deceptive.
Bronx Councilwoman Melissa Mark-Viverito says war is not the answer and that the Orchard Beach concert is an example of the Army?s inappropriate recruitment tactics.
Mark-Viverito and Assemblyman Jose Rivera were among those at the protest. ?Orchard Beach is a place for family gathering. It?s a place for people to have as recreation. It should not be a place for the army to come in here and try to recruit youngsters,? Rivera said.
Rivera said recruiters often sign teens up by telling them they?re going to get a college education. He wants to let young Bronx residents know they have other options for the future.
