A state senator from the Bronx is reportedly giving up his leadership post in Albany. The Daily News reported Wednesday that state Sen. Efrain Gonzalez Jr. (D-Bronx) is quitting as chairman of the Senate Minority Conference. His office said the corruption charges he is facing would have too great of an impact on his time. Gonzalez was indicted in December for allegedly stealing more than $400,000 from charities and other organizations for his own personal use. Federal prosecutors claim he used some of the money to pay for New York Yankees tickets, run his cigar business in the Dominican Republic and other personal expenses. In August, he pleaded not guilty to mail fraud. Prosecutors accused Gonzalez of using checks from a Bronx group and then mailing them out to pay his own personal bills.Gonzalez was making an extra $8,250 on top of his salary for the leadership spot. He's had his seat in the 33rd District since 1989.
