More eyes are turning to the Jersey Shore at night after claims are circulating that they are coming from off the east coast.

Republican Rep. Jeff Van Drew suggests “neutralizing” the drones out of the sky. He blames the drones on Iran. "We also know there is an Iranian drone mothership that is missing from port in Iran, with a timeline matching the emergence of these drones. The time to act on this information is now before the threat escalates any further," he says.

That theory was denied by the Pentagon.

“There is not any truth to that. There is no Iranian ship off the coast of the United States, and there is no so-called mothership launching drones toward the United States," says Department of Defense Deputy Press Secretary Sabrina Singh.

Monmouth County Sheriff Shaun Golden is calling on Gov. Phil Murphy to declare a state of emergency and issue an executive order banning recreational drone use during nighttime hours.

New Jersey mayors were able to get filled in at a briefing Wednesday with security officials. They were told the drones are not being flown by the U.S. Military or a large tech company. The Coast Guard is monitoring the shoreline. And that the drones are not emitting any radio frequencies making them complicated to track.

Mayors are still not satisfied with the response.

"Ban drone flying at night until this is all sorted out," said Mine Hill Township Mayor Sam Morris. "Whoever's doing this is tiptoeing right through the federal and state laws."

"How can we in 2024 not know where these drones are taking off from and where they're landing? That to me, doesn't make any sense," said Montgomery Township Mayor Neena Singh.

Gov. Murphy says there is no threat to the public at this time. People are still encouraged to send information to the FBI.
