Cardinal Edward Egan visited Rockland County Monday to bless a new mausoleum at St. Anthony's Church in Nanuet.
Egan says many churches are moving toward the alternative to cemeteries as space becomes increasingly limited. St. Anthony's Church, the largest Catholic parish in Rockland County, noticed the space problem three years ago and looked to address it with a mausoleum.
St. Anthony's used $2 million in cemetery funds to lay the foundation, with the rest of the money coming from a church loan. The mausoleum matches the church's architecture with stone and glass and for parishioners it's a way to keep their loved ones close to home.
"This is really a great service for the people to be able to have their loved ones buried right near them in rock, so they don't have to go into the city or anywhere else,? Egan says.
