It could have been worse - it came within a few feet of being much worse for a few lucky homeowners in the village of Goshen Wednesday evening.

At a home on Murray Avenue, a thick tree split and fell, narrowly missing the main part of the house, just brushing a corner of the porch.

At a home on Lark Street in Washingtonville, a large part of a tree fell onto the roof as a 2-year-old girl was sleeping upstairs.

"It was insane. There was so much chaos going on," the girl's mother, Ariel Santoro, said. "Damages are minimal right now as long as it doesn't continue to fall, so I'm safe still in the house and not displaced, so that's good."

Santoro said her daughter was awakened by the crash, and then went back to sleep.

While homes in the county were largely spared from major damage, about 17,000 households lost power.

Central Hudson officials said its crews are coming close to full restoration of power.

Meantime, the company is offering free dry ice and bottled water at locations in Newburgh, Fishkill and Poughkeepsie.

Tree service workers told News 12 it may take another day before all the downed trees can be removed.

An employee for the Goshen School District said its grounds crews are working especially quickly to move out two large trees that fell by the athletic fields ahead of Friday's graduation ceremony.
