Sunday marks the start of Child Passenger Safety Week in New York.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced the initiative, saying the goal is to raise awareness and remind parents and caregivers that safety seats must be installed properly.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, car crashes are a leading cause of death for children ages 1 to 13 years old.

The NHTSA also has several tips to keep kids safe while driving, including choosing a car seat based on the child's age and size. Drivers are asked to refer to their car manufacturer's instructions when installing the seat.

The NHTSA also says to keep the child in their seat until they max out of its height and weight requirements, and children under age 12 should not sit in the front passenger seat.
