The City Council wants to stop city agencies from giving rent subsidies to bad landlords in the Bronx and city.
The city?s AIDS agency and a city homeless service program currently help some homeless residents with their rent payments through subsidies. However, the city says some of the landlords that receive subsidies have buildings with numerous violations.
The Council is proposing a bill that would restrict the subsidies from the city?s AIDS agency and its homeless service program. The city?s homeless department says it has a checklist of conditions for apartments, but council members say the city ends up paying rent to landlords with records of housing violations.
