Officials at the Clarkstown School District say they may be forced to eliminate more than 130 positions following the loss of $3 million in state aid.
Rockland County's largest public school system is looking to cut 50 teachers, 62 teachers' assistants and 24 other staff members in an effort to close a $5.9 million budget gap.
Clarkstown Schools Superintendent Margaret Keller-Cogan has also recommended a hiring freeze and a pay freeze for herself.
"The potential budget reductions represent what we hope will be the worst-case scenario," Keller-Cogan said in a statement.
Clarkstown Board of Education members are currently reviewing the superintendent's proposal.
