Rockland residents bundled up Wednesday as temperatures dipped and the region was hit with frigid weather.

The bone-chilling temperatures kept residents in downtown Nyack layered up with coats, gloves and hats. "We're gonna try layering our clothes and dressing warm, eating warm soup and staying out of the cold for long periods of time," says one person fleeing from the cold.

Due to the frigid weather, many warming shelters throughout Westchester and the Hudson Valley are open and are expecting an increase in the number of people seeking shelter from the cold.

With temperatures expected to drop across the area over the next few days, Westchester County Social Services is preparing for the worst.

The staff at the Pascack Community Center in Nanuet is expecting a rush of the homeless and needy and says they are prepared to provide them with a place to escape from the frigid temperatures.

The Pascack Community Center is one of five warming centers in the Town of Clarkstown open to residents during the cold snap.
