The Bloomingburg community is rallying behind a Sullivan County family in need of help and support in the middle of back-to-back hardships this holiday season.
Sinead Collado, 31, tells News 12 her mom was diagnosed with reoccurring cervical cancer in June. She says her family was struggling with the diagnosis and her grueling treatments when their house was badly damaged in an electrical fire last month.
Then, days later, Collado says her dad’s car was totaled in an accident on his way home from work.
“It’s all back to back and to not have a home, it’s really hard. It’s like, we didn’t need this. My family has been through so much. My mom, since she was little, has been through so much.”
Collado says the family was living with her sister for three weeks until their insurance recently found them temporary housing.
“It’s been really hard. I want to go to medical school, and I had to stop studying for my MCAT. We just didn’t expect everything to happen so fast,” says Collado.
A GoFundMe in support of the family has raised more than $7,500.
Collado says her family is forever grateful for the kindess and support.
“I was shocked to see how many people have reached out to us so far to help my mom,” Collado says. “It’s been helping us with simple things that we lost. I’m very thankful.”
