There's confusion among some commuters along the
Hutchinson River Parkway after exit signs switched up right before their eyes.
Within the past few weeks, the
State Department of Transportation changed the numbers on the exit signs along
the parkway.
The DOT says it is installing new
retro-reflective, mileage-based exit signs along the parkway from the Bruckner
Interchange in the Bronx all the way to the Connecticut state line.
Along with the upgrades and
replacements to these exit signs, they say they're also doing this to
directional signs along the ramps.
Some residents say not enough
notice was given, and it's causing confusing commutes.
"I
think that it's a big issue for the public, I mean if you're traveling and
you're using your GPS like you did this morning, and you didn't know where you
were going, it could cause an accident and quite frankly it should be
addressed, says Carrie
Giammarino of Scarsdale.
The areas the DOT transitioned exit
signs to a mile-based exit numbering system includes the Hutchinson River
Parkway, the Taconic State Parkway and Interstate 84.
The State DOT also says that a
primary consideration is to keep a consistent exit numbering system to avoid
confusing drivers, but some residents say that is not working.
Giammarino
tells News 12 she missed her exit, which is
now Exit 9 but was previously Exit 17, while driving on the Hutchinson River
Parkway last week. She adds that she wasn’t alone in this in that nearly a
half-dozen other cars after her were also missing the exit and even tried to
back up onto the parkway.
Commuters are advised to be aware
of the change in signs and to double-check their GPS as they move along the
parkway.
