It’s been a frustrating year for many Tinton Falls residents who are dealing with a terrible smell in their neighborhood.
Monmouth County officials fielded dozens of calls from residents back in January complaining about a foul smell in the air. They determined that the smell was coming from the county-owned landfill.
There is now a hotline people can call to report issues related to the odor. Residents say they are pleased with the idea.
“Well, I think it’s a good idea if you’ve got a hotline out there," said Tinton Falls resident Aaron Young. "That way people can call in about what’s going on and what they smell, and how it’s affecting them.”
The waste site is owned by the county and run by a company called Waste Management. According to company officials, heavy rain can contribute to what’s known as “atmospheric cap”- a phenomenon responsible for trapping odors close to ground level.
Waste Management put short and long-term plans into action in January. About two months in, It seems that their efforts have been working.
Right now, it’s fresh air, but that could change depending on the weather. Residents can call 732-599-ODOR (6367) to report any future problems related to the smell.
