The former site of Our Lady of Mercy's D'Urso Pavilion in Pelham Bay will soon be home to about 50 condos.
When the medical center closed its doors more than two years ago, the property was sold to Elmo Realty Company. The company plans to build condos but some residents say they are not happy with the change. Residents say they rather see two-family homes in the area instead of big apartment buildings. Others feel it should re-open as a medical facility. Bronx Councilman Jimmy Vacca agreed it should not be turned into housing. Vacca says he had hoped it would be turned into an assisted living center.
Despite the opposition, the project is moving forward. Workers have begun to demolish the inside of the former medical center to make way for two and three-bedroom condos. The work is expected to be complete by next spring.
