Concerns about contamination at a construction site in Spring Valley had the Rockland County Health Department removing dirt from the area Friday. Two petroleum tanks were recently found at the site, which is being used for an urban renewal project. However, the health department found contamination while trucks were sifting through the soil. ?As soon as the machinery moves that soil it starts to vaporize the product and that vapor is moving into the air,? said Catherine Quinn of the Rockland County Health Department.
The health department says the new contamination is a surprise because it does not appear to be related to the two tanks already removed. But they will continue to monitor the site as construction continues.
The site is next door to the Little Angels Day Care, which was asked to relocate to a temporary site during the construction. However, the director of the center says that wasn?t feasible. So the center opened Friday, but closed early after news of the contamination. They are currently looking for another location and say they will open on a day-to-day basis.
Spring Valley Mayor George Darden says the day care center needs to move so progress can continue. To view footage of the site, go to channel 612 on your iO digital cable box and click on iO Extra.
