Doctors were able to save a pregnant woman's baby after she was struck by a van and pinned under a school bus Thursday.

More than two dozen bystanders rushed to help 33-year-old Donnette Sanz after the 5-ton school bus crushed her during yesterday afternoon's accident. They lifted the bus so Sanz could be pulled free.

Doctors at nearby Saint Barnabas Hospital saved her 3-pound, 6-ounce son by emergency Caesarean section, but Sanz was pronounced dead shortly after his birth.

Sanz worked as a New York City traffic agent and was on her way to lunch when she was struck by a van that pushed her in front of the bus. The van was driven by 72-year-old Walter Walker, who claimed his brakes failed.

Mechanical tests are being conducted to determine if brake failure took place at the time of the accident.

Walker has been charged with criminally negligent homicide and aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle. Police say Walker, who previously had 20 driver?s license suspensions, should have never been on the road.

A candlelight vigil will be held Friday outside Saint Barnabas Hospital, where Sanz?s newborn baby boy is in stable condition.
