One person is dead after a wrong-way crash in New City.
The Clarkstown Police Department said the crash happened on Route 304 near the intersection with Second Street in New City around 9:15 p.m. on Monday.
A 35-year-old man from Ohio was driving a Hyundai sedan when he turned onto Route 304, traveling northbound in the southbound lanes. He ended up crashing head-on into a BMW driven by an 18-year-old boy. A 16-year-old girl was also in the car's front passenger seat.
The two people in the BMW were extricated and taken to Westchester Medical Center with serious physical injuries. The driver of the Hyundai was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity has not been released.
Route 304 was closed between Second Street and Congers Road until well past midnight. It has since reopened, but Clarkstown Town Supervisor George Hoehmann reminds drivers to be extra careful driving on roads like Route 304.
“These are difficult roads, Routes 304 and 303," he said. "In fact, we are in the throes of a study that we had pushed for through the state. [It] is looking at the overall conditions of both roadways within the town of Clarkstown to recommend safety upgrades.”
The investigation is ongoing.
