(AP) -- New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo has hired former New York City Council Speaker Christine Quinn as a special adviser.
Quinn's first day on the job was Saturday. She joined Cuomo at New York University for an announcement about preventing sexual assault on college campuses.
Cuomo said in a statement that Quinn is a proven leader and a champion of progressive causes.
Quinn was a member of the City Council from 1999 to 2013. She was elected speaker of the council in 2006.
Quinn ran for mayor in 2013 but lost to Bill de Blasio in the Democratic primary.
