The Volunteer Firefighters Association of Tappan and Rockland County officials agreed on a new plan for the Washington Street sidewalk construction last week.
The original renovation plan included raising the curb along the length of the street, including in front of the Tappan Firehouse. Firefighters and their attorney, Dwight Joyce, said the curb would force firefighters to enter the house on only one side, which could delay their response to emergencies by about three minutes.
Both firefighters and county officials say the new plan met their demands. Firefighters will be able to enter and get their gear quickly and workers will resume construction soon.
