The Department of Environmental Conservation is now identifying a spill in Salisbury Mills as the cause of a widespread, mysterious odor in Orange County last month.
People reported the odor smelled like perfume or gasoline and reported smelling it for days throughout the county and as far as Pennsylvania.
DEC officials say they investigated the origin of the odor and found a strong perfume smell and spill of some sort along a road in Salisbury Mills.
A representative for the state department said they believe the spill caused the smell locally. They wouldn't say what type of spill it was and didn't have an explanation of why it smelled beyond the immediate area.
The DEC says soil samples were taken and nothing toxic was found.
