Deep Dive: New York state unemployment rate is at 7.1%

Vaccine mandates may start impacting unemployment numbers.
In this week's Deep Dive, News 12's Kristie Reeter takes a look at the unemployment impacts on our area.
Caleb Silver with Investopedia says New York state has an unemployment rate of 7.1% as of September, higher than the national average of 4.8%.
Across the state, the highest unemployment is in New York City - where it stands at 8.9%.
"We had steep job losses across the city. Very slow recovery there," says Silver.
Westchester's 4.4% unemployment rate is under the national average. And Suffolk and Nassau counties also have 4.2%, much lower than the national average.
What sectors of the job market may be showing the most strength and growth? What does all that mean as we head to the end of the year?
"It is leisure and hospitality, and that's where the steepest job losses were in 2020 and the beginning of 2021. But we are seeing aggressive hiring, 17% growth from September to last September across bars, restaurants, hotels," says Silver.
