A state of emergency declaration and the rising levels of the Neversink River have Deerpark residents on edge tonight as Hurricane Irene barrels toward the East Coast. The Town of Deerpark has been devastated over the past few years after the river has flooded, causing damage.
Officials say the Neversink River water levels are currently at 4 feet. If they make it to 10.5 feet, it will be time to evacuate.
The Highway Department is also preparing for impact, sharpening chain saws, testing lights and getting signs ready to block off any trouble spots.
Officials also say if the need arises, they will open up a temporary shelter at the ASK School, which is located near the high school in Port Jervis.
