The Deerpark town supervisor announced he is resigning as marriage officer before the same-sex marriage law goes into effect.
Town Supervisor Karl Brabenec told News 12 Hudson Valley via email today that he cannot perform same-sex ceremonies due to personal religious beliefs.
Brabenec says the Town Board will find a way to accommodate gay marriage ceremonies. As for a permanent solution, County Legislator Dennis Simmons (R-Port Jervis) says it will be up to town officials to appoint someone else to replace Brabenec as marriage officer.
There are reports that Town Clerk Florence Santini is also giving up her post as marriage officer. However, News 12 Hudson Valley was told Santini had no comment at this time.
