Democrat David Carlucci defeated Republican Scott Vanderhoef for the state Senate seat in the 38th District Tuesday night.
The Clarkstown town clerk received 53 percent of the total vote to Vanderhoef's 47 percent. It was the longtime Rockland County executive's third failed bid for a higher office.
The seat was vacated by the late state Sen. Thomas Monahan, who died of cancer in June.
Carlucci says he's ready to work to reform the Senate and help New York move in a new direction.
The 38th District covers Rockland and parts of Orange County.
