The Coast Guard says the body of missing kayaker Laurence Broderick was found in the water off Orchard Beach in the Bronx just after 2 p.m. following hours of searching.
The Coast Guard says Broderick, 45, was wearing his life vest when his body was found.
Faced with heavy rain and driving winds, first responders searched for the missing kayaker on the Long Island Sound this morning.
Mamaroneck police say they received a call around 4 a.m. Tuesday from Eastchester police to request a well-being check on Broderick.
His mother said her son left her Eastchester home around 6 p.m. Monday to go kayaking from Harbor Island Park. He last checked in with her after 8 p.m. and said he was in Hempstead and would kayak to Mamaroneck.
Broderick’s kayak was found on Glen Island Park in New Rochelle. His vehicle was located at Mamaroneck Harbor.
Mamaroneck resident and experienced boater Mary Lou Forlano says some kayakers don’t check the weather conditions beforehand.
“Once you get out there, it takes a little while to get back in here,” says Forlano. “The tides can turn, the winds…you’re fighting the elements.”
The medical examiner has removed the body.
