City of Newburgh police said 18-year-old Town of Newburgh resident Kevin Gaspar is now facing several felony offenses, including weapons charges and reckless endangerment.
Several shots were fired outside of Newburgh Free Academy's Main Campus on Tuesday afternoon.
Police said a fight broke out during dismissal that involved several students and Gaspar, who is a former student.
This fight spilled onto Fullerton Avenue, where the student aggressors separated themselves from the fight.
Police said Gaspar fired several shots into a crowd near the Fullerton Avenue and South Street school bus driveway.
A school security deputy responded and saw that Gaspar was still holding the firearm.
He ran off from the scene and lead the deputy on a foot chase.
City of Newburgh police joined in on the pursuit and located Gaspar two blocks away from the scene of the shooting.
They took him into custody and recovered the loaded handgun that was used in the shooting.
The incident put the school building on lockout for 10 minutes around dismissal.
While police said no injures were reported, they're asking anyone with information to come forward as the incident is still under investigation.
