Many are missing significant and possibly life-changing doctor visits due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Medical professionals worry there might be some people with undiagnosed diseases or worsening conditions because they've fallen behind on regular screenings.
"There may be people out there with cancer that just don't know it because they have failed to get in and get their routine screenings,” says Dr. Sherlita Amler, Westchester’s health commissioner. "I understand that during COVID, people were afraid to go to the doctor's office. They didn't know if someone ill could be in there.”
With COVID-19 rates much lower now, Amler is stressing the importance of regular physicals, where ailment such as high blood sugar can be treated easily before they lead to something more severe.
"It's very important that you know your numbers,” says Amler.
There are two free clinics in Yonkers and White Plains that offer routine vaccines for kids before they go back to school.
The clinics say they can also take care of adults.
