Westchester County is bracing for several days of dangerous heat, and medical experts are urging residents to take precautions to avoid heat-related illnesses.

Dr. Evan Cohen, with Emergency Services at Northern Westchester Hospital, says the most important steps are staying hydrated, limiting time outdoors during the hottest part of the day and finding air-conditioned spaces whenever possible.

“Keep yourself hydrated, so you should be drinking plenty of water,” Cohen said. “You want to avoid sun exposure between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. when it’s the hottest and the sun is the strongest. If you don’t have access to air conditioning, there are cooling centers around Westchester County.”

Health officials say air conditioning is especially important for people who are at higher risk, including older adults and those with lung or other chronic medical conditions.

Residents without air conditioning are encouraged to seek relief at local libraries, community centers, and other designated cooling centers.

The current heat wave is expected to continue through Friday.
