State Department of Transportation officials have launched an experimental project on the Palisades Interstate Parkway in Rockland County aimed at keeping deer off the road.
The Department of Transportation is trying out reflectors that bounce a beam of light toward the woods when a car's headlights are turned on. The DOT hopes the reflected headlights will startle deer before they reach the roadway.
The DOT plans on installing cameras along the parkway between exits 5 and 7 to monitor the effectiveness of the reflectors.
In 2007, more than 12,000 accidents were reported across the state due to collisions with animals.
