Administrators in the Hicksville School District presented a plan that would lay off 59 full-time teaching assistants and 38 part-time teaching assistants.

A total of 141 part-time teacher aides would be hired in their place.

The announcement was made at Tuesday night’s school board meeting.

According to the district superintendent, most of the cuts are not for budgetary reasons. Instead, it’s because the superintendent became aware that teaching assistants were performing duties outside their job title.

One teaching job and one administrative job will be eliminated to help balance the budget. Twelve teaching jobs and one administrative job will not be replaced following retirements and departures.

Teaching assistants who lose their jobs would have the first chance at teacher aide positions. The school district is in talks about possibly creating full-time aide positions.
