There are new developments regarding an Eastchester man who was detained after joining a Gaza aid mission.
Michael Fix’s family says they’ve finally heard from him, as members of the Irish Diplomatic team in Israel met with prisoners and were able to confirm that Michael was safe.
A video recorded before Fix lost contact with the outside world shows him stating:
“My name is Michael Fix and I’m a U.S. citizen. If you’re watching this video, then I’ve been kidnapped by the IOF.” Michael Fix is among hundreds detained after a flotilla attempting to bring humanitarian aid to Gaza was intercepted by Israeli forces.
According to his brother, Fix and other prisoners were given little to no food. He has expressed growing frustration over what he sees as delayed action from U.S. officials.
“One would think that when a loved one is taken overseas, it wouldn't be a matter of a number of days before you can get any status on them,” John said.
Israel, meanwhile, is pushing back against the flotilla’s claims. In a new statement, Israeli authorities state that the flotilla had “almost no equipment or humanitarian supplies” and that “this was never about delivering aid. It was always about provocation.”
Michael Fix told his family he couldn’t verify those claims because he never made it onto the flotilla itself.
"The message wasn’t that we were bringing a container load of supplies. It was more, ‘Why can’t we bring these supplies in?’” claims John.
The Fix family continues working with U.S. officials to secure Michael’s release. They said the update brought some comfort — but also raised urgent questions about what comes next.
