Health officials across the state, and at the Westchester County Center in White Plains, are scrambling to catch up after thousands of vaccination appointments were canceled during this week’s snowstorm.

State officials tell News 12 it will take about six days to make up the 1,500 to 2,000 appointments that had to be canceled.

As a result, there was a record number of people wrapped around the Westchester County Center Wednesday.

County and state officials say the group consisted of people who had appointments for Wednesday, as well as people who had their Monday and Tuesday appointments pushed back because of the nor'easter.

A state official says about 1,000 people got their first dose Wednesday and another 1,000 got a second dose.

That — combined with makeup appointments — is why a record 2,700 people got vaccinated at the County Center by day's end. The center normally administers about 1,000 shots a day, so the health officials inside were tasked with vaccinating nearly three times their daily quota. While outside lines stretched around the building, people who spoke with News 12 say they are giving high marks to the way things are running. "It was so easy and very organized. It's a flawless procedure, so painless, really," says Patty Zillitto, of Eastchester. "Everything is going fine. Let me tell ya, everybody is very nice, very good," adds Julia Hartmett, of Piermont

News 12 is told that the state is doubling the number of staff and expanding points of distribution indoors to accommodate the influx.

There will also be extended hours, Normally, the County Center is open from 8 a.m. - 7 p.m. For the next several days, it will be open until 8 p.m.
