Counselors in Bronx and city public schools will soon see some changes under the school chancellor?s new plan.

According to a Daily News report, the Department of Education is dismantling the central office that provides drug and guidance counselors to schools. Instead, the counselors will report directly to the school principals. The Daily News reports that a smaller Office of Youth Development will still handle some of the former counselor responsibilities, such as helping homeless children and running after school programs.

These changes are part of Schools Chancellor Joel Klein?s new plan to give principals more power. Meanwhile, some parents and counselors worry the students? needs will fall through the cracks. They feel many counselors will now report to already overburdened principals.
