An electrical fire slightly damaged the Dragon Coaster at Rye Playland Saturday night, according to Westchester County Executive Ken Jenkins.

The fire broke out around 8:50 p.m. in the lift area, about halfway up the coaster.

No injuries were reported, and the park was closed at the time after ending its season last weekend.

“Playland’s beloved Dragon Coaster was slightly damaged last night during what appears to have been an electrical fire,” Jenkins said.

“No one was injured, and the Park is already closed for the season.”Jenkins thanked the Rye Fire Department for its quick response and said the damage can be repaired.

“Thankfully, the damage can be repaired by Playland’s maintenance team and we expect that work to take place during the fall,” Jenkins said.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

The Dragon Coaster has been a part of the amusement park's silhouette for 97 years.

Jenkins said officials expect it to be ready for Playland’s 99th season.

“Rest assured: this Dragon will rise again for Playland’s 99th season,” Jenkins said.
