Elementary school students in Poughkeepsie turned a playful idea into a meaningful effort to help others.

Pre-K through second grade students at Krieger Elementary School collected more than 1,000 cans of soup as part of their own "Souper Bowl."

The donations will be given to a local food pantry.

School officials say the food will help families experiencing food insecurity in the community.

The principal of Krieger Elementary praised the students for their efforts.

She said the children showed compassion, generosity and a strong commitment to helping others.
