An employee at The Children's Village in Dobbs Ferry is being remembered after he was killed when a tree fell on his car.
Flowers and candles mark the spot where 27-year-old Danilo Gomez lost his life. A tree fell on his vehicle in Dobbs Ferry over the weekend.
Downed power lines and shattered glass still litter Walgrove Avenue, and the massive tree has been moved to the side of the road.
The tree fell as a severe storm rolled through the area Saturday night, kicking up gusts of 50 to 60 mph.
Gomez, who is from the Bronx, was killed near the entrance of the Children's Village, where he worked over the past four years.
The nonprofit helps create positive outcomes for at-risk youth including foster and immigrant children.
"Danilo served at The Children's Village for nearly four years," said Children's Village president and CEO Jeremy C. Kohomban. "He was kind, gentle, thoughtful and a trusted member of our Management Team. Because of his leadership hundreds of children found love, belonging and family. Danilo, his energy, his smile, his optimism, and his love of all people will be deeply missed by all of us. To Danilo's family - our deepest sympathies and our deepest gratitude for sharing Danilo with us, and thank you for allowing him to be part of our mission to make the world a better place for all children and all families."
Jose Saldana, director of the Release Aging People in Prison Campaign (RAPP) added, "No one can or should minimize the tremendous and lasting harm of serious crime. Yet we must also value redemption & human transformation. People can and do rehabilitate themselves and others around them every day. That is why we oppose permanent punishment.”
