The Department of Education will close Evander Childs High School in June, making this year?s graduating class the school?s last.
The school, located on East Gun Hill Road, has been phasing out new classes since 2004, leaving only the current senior class to graduate. Once notorious for violence, the school has rebounded in recent years under Principal Monica Ortiz-Urena. She?s lowered student violence and raised test scores. However, the turnaround will not be enough to keep the school open.
The Department of Education said the building will continue housing the six small schools that have been sharing space with Evander Childs.
