A Warwick family is raising awareness about a rare genetic syndrome that has their 18-month-old grandson fighting for his life in the hospital.
Wyatt Lopez was born with a condition known as hypoplastic left heart syndrome which his grandmother, Andrea Muster, says caused the left side of his heart to be underdeveloped.
“It was diagnosed in utero. He had his first surgery a week after he was born where they reconfigured his entire heart. It’s hard to watch him go through things,” says Muster.
Muster says the toddler has had two open heart surgeries and several serious medial setbacks while on a heart transplant list and receiving inpatient care for the past six months at Hassenfeld Children’s Hospital in New York City
“He can’t return home without a heart,” Muster tearfully says. "Every day is a fight."
News 12 will have more tonight on Wyatt’s condition and why the family says the boy’s age, weight and height make it difficult to find a match.
