(12/29/06) BAGHDAD - Former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein was executed in Baghdad, Iraq late Friday night Eastern Standard Time. The hanging occurred after an agreement between U.S. and Iraqi officials. The execution took place around 6:05 a.m. local time. Dawn marked the beginning of Muslim holiday Eid Al-Adha. Officials say the execution had to be carried out before dawn to stay within Iraqi law. No executions can be carried out on Muslim holy days.
