A former NYPD officer from Orange County who worked the sex crimes unit has been ordered pay $30 million for sexually abusing two of his nieces when they were young girls.
Nicholas Mcateer, of Greenwood Lake, was sentenced in 2018 to 18 years in prison following a guilty plea to first-degree rape.
The victims did not come forward until they were adults and filed a lawsuit for emotional distress in 2020.
In a statement, their attorney said the decision gives the women a small sense of justice.
News 12 reached out to 52-year-old Mcateer's attorneys for comment but had not heard back as of Friday night.
