A racist road rage incident in Orange County turned dangerously violent Saturday when a man pretending to be a state trooper threatened to stab a Black, off-duty officer with a knife.
The man was arrested early Tuesday evening by City of Newburgh police.
News 12 was given exclusive video of the incident by the victim, Robert McLymore, who is a lieutenant with the Town of Wallkill police.
“’He was like I’ll cut you, you effing N-word,’” said McLymore. “I was like, OK. And he’s like, ‘I’ll cut you,’ repeating himself.”
The 45-year-old is also a pastor in the City of Newburgh.
McLymore was headed to church Saturday with his teenage son when he says the driver started yelling racial slurs, and claimed he was a state trooper, after McLymore let an oncoming car make a left turn.
That part of the incident is also captured on cellphone video.
“This is personal. What hurt me is that it could have been my life and my son’s life,” said McLymore.
McLymore says the driver followed him from 9W to Broadway where he almost rearended his car and got out twice to threaten him with a box cutter and then a knife.
State police say the driver is not and never was a trooper.
City of Newburgh police are looking for the suspect and have a clear shot of his license plate and face.
McLymore says he’s offended and hopes the suspect is caught.
“It still shows there’s racism out there for me to experience this at 45 and it’s 2022.”
Despite the frightening ordeal, McLymore says he forgives the driver and hopes the incident will change his views.
McLymore says ultimately, he’s grateful no one was hurt.
