Experts are advising homeowners in the Hudson Valley to be aware of ice dams during freezing temperatures.

That's when the snow on the roof melts during a warm period and then freezes again overnight. The melting water can get inside the home.

Experts say to should remove any ice dams before they damage the home but be careful when removing them.

"We have these polar vortex steamers, and we just melt everything away. Chopping with the claw of a hammer, hatchets or whatever other methods some people do are just going to damage the gutter and they're going to damage a roof," says Mark Franzoso, president of Franzoso Contracting, Inc.

Experts say the best way to prevent a dam is to remove the snow 6 feet up from the gutter line immediately after a big snowfall.
