Eleven people went to the Salvation Army in Peekskill to get money to help them get back on their feet after a fire destroyed their homes at the Hillcrest Park Condo's last month.
Those impacted filled out some paperwork to get $2,500 that they can use for whatever expenses they need.
They also left with a Walmart gift card and business card for the Salvation Army if they need help with anything else.
The effort was made possible, thanks to donations from the Salvation Army, local rotary organizations, churches and people from the community.
As News 12 reported, a fire destroyed more than a dozen units and left more than two dozen people with nothing but the clothes they were wearing when the fire broke out in early January.
The families said they were incredibly grateful for the help.
Two women who lost everything that day said they are going to use the money to buy everyday necessities or furniture when their homes are rebuilt.
“It really warmed my heart. Coming here really made me so happy, that they want to help us and all their doing for us,” said Linda Gadaleta.
“Today means to me, like we lost a lot, but we gained something and we got together with the good people who are helping us. I’m blessed with my family and the good people in my life,” said Rajinder Dhillon.
